Lesson 8. Possessives Case.

We use the possessive case:

 (мы употребляем притяжательный падеж:)

1. to show that something belongs to somebody (показать, кому принадлежит та или иная вещь)

Mary's bag

2. to explain the relationship between two or more people  (показать взаимоотношения/связь между двумя или более людьми) 

 Tom's uncle

3. to talk about shops and houses (говорим о магазине или доме)

He is at the baker's shop.
They are at Bob's house.

The possessive case is formed in two ways:

1. with  's for people and animals                                    2. with the preposition  of for things

                                                                     

                                                         the legs of the chair

 the cat's tail 

Singular nouns or proper nouns take  's  (мы образуем притяжательный падеж  существительных при помощи буквы -s , пере которой ставим апостроф (  ' )


the boy's bike

• When the proper noun ends in -s we add 's or only an apostrophe (')

 Doris's puppy     or      Doris' puppy

                      Plural nouns ending in - s take  ' (apostrophe). 

  (если мы образуем притяжательный падеж существительных  во множетвенном числе, мы    прибавляем к существительному только апостроф.)

the girls' stars

•   Irregular plural nouns take   's  

 the children's teacher

•    When the same things belongs  to two or more people we add  's only to the last noun. (когда одна вещь принадлежит двум (или более) людям, мы добавляем 's только к последнему существительному.)

Ann and Mary's desk (the desk belongs to both of them)

• When two or more things belong to two or more people and we want to show that each person has his/her own things  we add   's   to each noun.(когда две или более двух вещей принадлежат двум (или более) людям и мы хотим показать что каждый человек владеет ею, мы добавляем 's к каждому существительному.

                                  Mary's and Sarah's horses (each girls has her own horse)

When we want to know to whom something belongs we use the question word whose. (когда мы спрашиваем, кому принадлежит та или иная вещь, мы начинаем предложение с вопросительного слова Whose (чей?)

Whose donkey is this? - It's Helen's.
