Lesson 4. The verb to be .

to be - глагл связка. Служит для связи слов в предложении. Употребляем для описанияя людей, животных и предметов. Имеет три формы (am, is, are) и изменяется по лицам.

 

Notice how we use the present tense verb be:

Affirmative (Утвердительная форма)

Singular  Long Form                                  Plural Long Form

I am                                                     We are

You are                                                You are

 He/She/It is                                          They are

 

•      We usually use the long form of the verb to be in written English:       We are from Moscow and we are ten years old.

I'm                                                     We're

You're                                                You're

                  He/She/It's                                          They're

•  We use short form of the verb to be in spoken English and informal written Enlish:   -What's your name?   -My name is Anna and I'm from Canada.

                     Negative (Отрицательная форма)    

Для образования отрицательных предложений мы ставим частичку - not после глагола связки.

 We aren't hungry.          My dad isn't a doctor.        I'm not from England.

Interrogative (Вопросительная форма)

Для образования вопросительных предложений нужно глагол связку вынести в начало предложения.

   Is  he/she/it...?                                 Are they...? 

Are they friends?        Is she your sister? 
Утвердительный ответ мы начинаем со слова Yes (да), отрицательный - со слова No (нет), затем подлежащее и нужную форму глагла -to be.

Yes/No + the subject pronauns + the verb form is(isn't) / are (aren't)

Are you...?   Yes,I am/we are. 
                              No, I'm not / we aren't.

     Is he/she/it ...?   Yes, he/she/it is.
                                    No, he/she/it isn't.

  Are they... ? Yes, they are.

                           No, they aren't.
